A man has been charged with drug offences after £1 million worth of cannabis fell off a horsebox going down a motorway.
The drugs were strapped onto the roof of the vehicle, which shed its load on the M1 near Belfast just before 7am on Saturday.
The suspect, 33, has been charged with possession of a class B controlled drug and possession with intent to supply a class B drug.
Detective Inspector Aubrey Shaw said it was a ‘significant amount of drugs’ that have been taken out of circulation.
DI Shaw said: ‘This will have a huge impact on the organised criminals involved in its importation, depriving them of commodity and, most importantly, profit.
‘We are continuing with our enquiries, and I want to make a number of appeals about the vehicle involved, its movements and its whereabouts.’
Drivers who were going westbound on the M1 in the Blacks Road junction area between 6:30am and 7am on Saturday are urged to contact police.
DI Shaw added: ‘Do you remember seeing the lorry? Did you witness the incident, or do you have dash cam footage of what occurred, of the vehicle and its movements? Do you know where this vehicle is now?’
The suspect is due to appear at Belfast Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.
