If you were planning to do Sober October, you might want to look away now.

It’s hard to resist the temptation to drink when your bev happens to be free.

Pubs across the UK are desperately trying to get the nation back to the boozer amid the looming risk of a second lockdown, and they’ve realised the best way to tempt us is free alcohol.

More than 1,250 pubs across the country are now taking part in the ‘Here’s to the pub’ scheme, which offers people a free drink of their choice for each week in October.

All pubs that are part of Ei Publican Partnerships are offering the deal, which allows you to take your pick from a range of beers, ciders, wines, gin and tonics, and soft drinks (so if you have the willpower needed to go to the pub and not get anything alcoholic, you won’t miss out on a nice freebie) for free every week in October.

Whatever drink you choose you’ll get for free, and you can do that once a week throughout the month of October (from 1 October to 29 October, so Halloween is not included).

Bear in mind that the 10pm curfew is still in place, so don’t plan for a late-night pub trip.

To redeem the deal, you’ll need to register your details at great-british-pubs.co.uk, choose your local pub, then place your order.

A warning: We tested out the site while at our desks this morning (not intending to actually get a drink, obviously), and it was a touch glitchy, with the actual drink options disappearing and mystery buttons popping up instead.

Don’t panic if it’s not working, just wait until you actually get to the pub, try then, and if it’s still not allowing you to get your free beverage just pop on your face mask and ask staff.

Nick Light, MD for Ei Publican Partnerships, said: ‘It’s more important than ever that we support our local pubs in the new “normal” to help the industry to get back on its feet.

‘There have been many missed moments over the last few months that would have been spent in the pub. From birthdays and anniversaries to first dates and bank holidays.

‘With the curfew and clear guidance on table service and PPE in place, publicans and their teams are continuing to work tirelessly to create safe and sustainable environments so we can get back to enjoying these moments in the pub.

‘To encourage people back in, we’re running our largest ever initiative and offering pub goers their first drink for free every week in October.’

Cheers to that.
