Dr Hilary Jones receives ‘vile messages’ from trolls after being awarded MBE by the Queen

Dr Hilary Jones revealed he was sent ‘vile messages’ from trolls on social media following news he has been an awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

It was announced over the weekend that the medical professional, 67, has been recognised by the Queen for the work he has been doing over the last six months, keeping the public informed via Good Morning Britain on the coronavirus pandemic.

Dr Hilary has been on TV for 32 years now and working as a doctor for over 40, with the star being listed in the Queen’s Birthday Honours to receive an MBE, alongside the likes of Joe Wicks.

Addressing the news on GMB on Monday morning, Dr Hilary said he was ‘thrilled and humbled’ to have been recognised in such a way, but revealed that not everyone was pleased to hear of his achievement.

While he said there was lots of people sending him well-wishes, there were also ‘lots of trolls’ having their say.

‘People that disagree with my opinions over the pandemic have been quite vile with their messaging,’ he said.

Suggesting that it had overshadowed his good news, Dr Hilary said: ‘We all know that people remember the one message that is horrible, that’s the one you look at.’

Of being awarded an MBE, he told hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid: ‘I was thrilled, obviously, and humbled as well. Certainly the last year, I’m aware that so many more people are deserving, more deserving than me.

‘What I do is my passion,’ he said, before insisting he was going to carry on ‘putting out good messages’ and providing a good perspective when it comes to public health.

Susanna told her colleague he has been a ‘very calming and very measured’ presence throughout the pandemic, as she hit out at those criticising Dr Hilary.

‘I’m sorry about that,’ she told him. ‘What is wrong with people?’

Agreeing, Piers said: ‘There’s a lot of morons out there.’

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
