Supergirl is officially coming to an end after season 6 – with star Melissa Benoist promising ‘one hell of a send off’ to the beloved character.

The CW series, based on the DC comic, has been a key part of TV’s Arrowverse, but will say its goodbyes at the end of the upcoming batch of episodes.

Melissa, who plays the titular superhero, was one of the first to pen an emotional goodbye to the series as the news was announced.

She said: ‘To say it has been an honor portraying this iconic character would be a massive understatement. Seeing the incredible impact the show has had on young girls around the world has always left me humbled and speechless.

‘She’s had that impact on me, too. She’s taught me strength I didn’t know I had, to find hope in the darkest of places, and that we are stronger when we’re united.

‘What she stands for pushes all of us to be better. She has changed my life for the better, and I’m forever grateful.’

On the upcoming final episodes, she added: ‘I’m so excited that we get to plan our conclusion to this amazing journey, and I cannot wait for you to see what we have in store.

‘I promise we’re going to make it one helluva final season.’

Season six is yet to be given a release date, but will launch in 2021.

Supergirl’s ending comes as Arrow – the leading series of the Arrowverse – came to an end after eight seasons earlier this year.

Both Arrow and Supergirl exist in the same television universe as a series of DC shows, including Batwoman, The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and Black Lightning.

Last year, the team managed to create a major crossover event – Crisis On Infinite Earths – which tied all the shows together on screen for the first time ever.

Supergirl returns in 2021 on The CW in the US and E4 in the UK.
