As The Kelly Clarkson Show and The Ellen DeGeneres Show make their return this week, all eyes will be on how their both fair in a very interesting time for talk shows.
Adapting to the new coronavirus regulations has already been a key challenge for most shows, and there will be extra focus on Ellen DeGeneres and her team after a summer of allegations that may have taken a hit on her image and the show’s reputation.
After a damning Buzzfeed expose and multiple statements brought to light alleged behavior of senior staff on set, claims of intimidation and potential racism made about senior producers – and talks of Ellen’s own behaviour – became trending topics.
Something Ellen has promised to address when she returns to the TV screens and reunites with her viewers this week.
Meanwhile, Kelly’s star power continues to rise after an Emmy Award win and stellar ratings sees her show stride into a second season with high expectations for more of the same success.
And according to leading celebrity communications expert Danny Deraney, the American Idol winner’s ‘genuine kindness’ could see her take Ellen’s spot as the reigning daytime talk show host.
Speaking to Metro.co.uk, he explained: ‘There’s a genuine kindness with Kelly, she comes across as relatable and caring which is something that people of every generation connect to.
‘It’s an excellent quality for a talk show host because it means don’t have to be a fan of her music to enjoy watching her show. You can just be a fan of her humanity because there is something that radiates out of Kelly and viewers are drawn to it.’
The PR expert admitted it would still take some time for anyone to knock Ellen from the top shop, but he stated why Kelly is currently the star’s biggest competition.
Danny added: ‘Kelly is in a luxurious position where she can continue being herself and working on the show like she has been in the past year and she could step up if Ellen slips further down the cracks. I think the position would be open to anyone in the talk show sector but Kelly could take over in the same way Ellen skyrocketed when Oprah Windrey ended her show.’
‘The opportunity is open for everyone or anyone who wants to take it but right now Kelly has the advantage. It does all still depend on what happens with Ellen and her show as she tries to move forward from the curreent backlash.’
He continued: ‘American Idol was 18 years ago and I have never heard a single, negative thing about Kelly during my time in the industry. Every time I worked on a project with her, she was kind, caring and had no ego about her. People respond well to that.
‘She has the girl next door quality that has helped her show to become so successful. Audiences are drawn to someone who feels real and truly kind. Ellen’s show is full of acts of kindness but it comes naturally for the audience to want to root for Kelly.’
The Kelly Clarkson Show returns on September 21 for its second season.
