In news that will come as no surprise to Lexie Grey fans, her devastating death has been voted the most heartbreaking exit in the show’s history so far.
When Lexie (Chyler Leigh) first arrived on the show as a fresh-faced intern, viewers could never have guessed she would leave us in such a tragic way.
The plane crash that changed the show forever also went on to eventually claim another beloved character in the top five, but Lexie came up top with 29% of the vote.
How did other exits compare? We have the results below.
Joint last: Henry Burton, Charles Percy, Dylan Young, Stephanie Edwards, Kyle Diaz, Preston Burke, Diane Pierce, Adele Webber, Reed Adamson, Ellis Grey – 1% or less
While most of these guys had us bawling our eyes out during their tragic deaths and shocking exits, they weren’t able to make a big dent in the poll.
Joint Eighth place: Cristina Yang and Samuel Avery – 2%
Samuel Avery’s devastating death was one of the saddest scenes has aired, and in many ways, the tragedy ended up being the beginning of the end for Jackson Avery and April Kepner.
Saying goodbye to the one and only Cristina Yang was thankfully a death-free scenario, but that didn’t make bidding farewell to Meredith’s person any less painful.
Seventh place: Denny Duquette Jr. – 4%
Denny’s death was often cited as one of the saddest patient death’s in the show’s history and we’d have to agree.
Even though the original five broke just about every rule possible to save him, his heart still failed anyway.
Sixth place: Alex Karev – 7%
Fans were not prepared for Alex to just leave Meredith and Jo behind but that’s how it played out in season 16.
The fact Alex reunited with Izzie and their kids didn’t quite make up for the loss of only member of the original five that was still on the show with Meredith.
Fifth place: Izzie Stevens – 8%
Losing Izzie so soon after we said goodbye to George was a hard pill to swallow, especially seeing as so many fans had been rooting for her and Karev.
Thankfully, some fans got that happy ending in the end.
Fourth place: Mark Sloan – 9%
Saying goodbye to our beloved McSteamy was not fun, at all.
Derek’s best friend, Sofia’s dad, founder of the Plastic Posse and everyone’s favorite man-whore… there’s so much to miss about Sloan. Thankfully, his name lives on everyday at the Grey + Sloan Memorial Hospital.
Third place: George O’Malley – 12%
There aren’t many Grey’s Anatomy fans who can say they weren’t left absolutely devastated by the moment when George wrote 007 into Meredith’s hand.
The fact he never got to achieve his plan to join the army in life was only cushioned by the fact he died a hero. And that vision of him in uniform when his spirit/ghost appeared to Izzie.
Second place: Derek Sheperd – 22%
In second place is undoubtedly one of the most heart-wrenching watches of all.
Saying goodbye to Derek was always going to be hard, but having to know that he could see how the failures of other doctors led to his death was so painful.
First place: Lexie Grey – 29%
Sweet, sweet Lexie. The first family member Meredith started to truly care for, the love of Mark Sloan’s life, a promising surgeon and so much more.
It makes sense that she has bagged the most votes from fans. RIP Little Grey.
Now excuse us while we go and cry into our pillows and mourn all the losses once again.
Grey’s Anatomy will return to ABC in the US.
