WWE followed up last week’s SmackDown with another stellar effort as the company continued to roll on the road to SummerSlam.
One of the biggest takeaways from last night’s show was Braun Strowman’s continued shift towards becoming a true monster after being taken out by The Fiend at the end of the Wyatt Swamp Fight at Extreme Rules.
Midway through the show, Alexa Bliss took part in a sitdown interview to address her friendship with the Universal Champion.
She admitted there could have been a more personal relationship with her friend and former Mixed Match Challenge partner, and suggested she could feel The Fiend and understood the phrase ‘a moth to a flame’.
She got incredibly emotional when she was asked about Braun claiming he ‘doesn’t give a damn about Alexa’ last week, adding another layer to this fantastic storyline.
Later one – at the end of the show – Strowman stormed the ring showing off a new shaven headed look as he called out The Fiend.
Instead, he was met by Little Miss Bliss who urged him to snap out of it, but he accused her for mocking and using him.
She tried to slap some sense into him, but the Monster Among Men lived up to his named as he hoisted her up for a gorilla press as the lights went out and The Fiend appeared.
He joined Bliss in the ring but Strowman has disappeared, before being shown laughing and screaming on the big screen as The Fiend laughed along too and the show came to a chilling end.
Best of the rest
At the top of the night, Big E was set to take on John Morrison when RETRIBUTION attacked both men and slipped back out of the ringside area as Miz rushed to checked on his tag team partner.
The locker room gathered as JoMo blamed Big E for the attack because of his tweet, while King Cobrin claimed he would be taking leadership of the roster.
Big E told him to shut up as he rallied the troops, before Sheamus arrived and insisted RETRIBUTION is scared of him.
Up next, the Golden Role Models were at their best with another cracking promo before the Tri-Branded Battle Royal to determined Bayley’s challenger for SummerSlam.
The IIconics stars Billie Kay and Peyton Royce featured alongside NXT’s Shotzi Blackheart and Tegan Nox, Lacey Evans, Naomi, Liv Morgan, Ruby Riott, Shayna Baszler, Bianca Belair, Nikki Cross, Dana Brooke and Tamina Snuka, with Asuka picking up the win to set up a rematch.
Backstage, Mandy Rose called out Sonya Deville and insisted she put so much work into her WWE career and she’s ready to put it all on the line in a Hair vs. Hair match at SummerSlam.
Later in the show, Sonya accepted the challenge, setting up a huge grudge match later this month.
Elsewhere, we had Shorty G facing Sheamus in a pretty solid match with the Celtic Warrior picking up the win, while he also distracted Riddle to allow King Corbin to attack.
AJ Styles was accompanied by Joseph Park (yes, Abyss himself) this week as he introduced the Phenomenal Intercontinental Statistic System and insisted there were no worthy challenges for the IC Title.
Jeff Hardy disagreed, laying down a challenge before attacking Styles and writing his name on the list.
There was decent in-ring action to follow, with Gran Metalik defeating Shinsuke Nakamura as Kalisto made his long awaited return to take out Cesaro at ringside.
Later, Big E and Morrison returned for their planned match, but RETRIBUTION again got involved, first attacking referees and crew backstage as the roster surrounded the ring.
Big E picked up the big win (pun intended), with Sheamus attacking with a Brogue Kick after the bell.
Quickfire results
- Asuka wins Tri-branded Battle Royal to challenge Bayley at SummerSlam
