Simon Cowell has released his first statement since breaking his back in a biking accident – and it’s clear he’s still got his trademark wit.
The media mogul was rushed to hospital on Saturday after falling off his electronic bike in Malibu, California.
Out with other half Lauren Silverman, her son Adam and their son, Eric, the Britain’s Got Talent judge went flying off his bike, causing serious injury.
He has since had five hours of extensive surgery to get him back to health, and could have been left paralysed.
Speaking out as he recovers in hospital, Simon, 60, thanked those who helped him and couldn’t resist cracking a joke at his expense.
He wrote: ‘Some good advice… If you buy an electric trail bike, read the manual before you ride it for the first time.’
‘I have broken part of my back,’ he confirmed. ‘Thank you to everyone for your kind messages.
‘And a massive thank you to all the nurses and doctors. Some of the nicest people I have ever met.’
‘Stay safe everyone,’ he concluded.
Thankfully the injuries avoided being more serious, with the break happening less than a centimetre away from his spinal cord.
As a result of the injuries, it’s been confirmed that he won’t be present at the America’s Got Talent live shows, which were due to kick off on Tuesday.
The show had adapted their format to fit new social guidelines due to coronavirus, with a ‘drive-through’ stage going in place of its usual theatre setting with a live audience.
His return date is not yet known and will depend on his recovery.
Heidi Klum, Howie Mandel and Sofia Vergara will continue without him.
