The MTV VMAs were dedicated to Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman, who died at the age of 43 this week.

The show opened with host Keke Palmer paying tribute to the much-loved star who died following a battle with colon cancer

She told the viewers: ‘We dedicate tonight’s show to a man whose spirit touched so many. He is a true hero, not just on screen but in everything he did. His impact lives forever.’

Footage of him accepting an MTV Movie award also played out, showing his kindness as he gave the award to James Shaw Jr who fought off a gunman to save other people’s lives.

It comes after Chadwick’s family revealed he had died after privately battling cancer for several years while still working.

As well as paying tribute to Chadwick, Keke’s opening monologue also referenced the other difficulties the world has faced in 2020.

She continued: ‘We can never tolerate police brutality. It’s our time to be the change we want to see. We need to come together, and music has that power.’

The VMAs themselves were vastly different to usual this year due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic meaning the performances had to be socially-distanced and outdoors or performed virtually from around the world.

Despite the different format, the stars still turned up in force – and in their best outfits – for the red carpet.

Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, The Weeknd and Machine Gun Kelly were among the stars who posed up for photos in the backstage photo area ahead of the show.

It may have been different to any VMAs before it, but the show still managed to pull off the incredible visuals it is known for, with the world’s hottest popstars overcoming the measures needed to be able to hit the stage.
