Kate Garraway insisted fans have been ‘lovely’ during husband Derek Draper’s coronavirus battles, following ‘abuse’ claims.
The 53-year-old was put into a coma after his symptoms worsened, with the condition ‘wreaking havoc’ on his body.
Appearing on Wednesday’s instalment of Good Morning Britain, Kate opened up about the reaction to her laughing and joking on the show – while her partner remains in a coma.
She appeared to suggest that people had judged her for being cheery while undertaking her presenting duties.
However, chatting to co-host Alex Beresford this morning, she explained there had been some crossed wires.
‘Yesterday there were all sorts of things, all over the internet, saying I’d been having abuse online for laughing on Good Morning Britain,’ she began. ‘I actually haven’t.
‘I haven’t, honestly. I think I triggered it by talking about how sometimes you feel a bit concerned when you’ve got big things going on in your life but obviously everyone has to smile as well.
‘So you think, you don’t want people to think that you don’t care by laughing… But you’ve all been lovely.’
Addressing viewers watching on from home, she stressed: ‘I don’t know where that came from, you’ve all been lovely.’
Kate’s words come after a discussion with Adil Ray about a paramedic being trolled for posting a selfie while on duty, during yesterday’s show.
‘We’ve talked about this, with me doing this show,’ the 53-year-old said. ‘If we’re having a laugh and a joke, because that’s our job in the morning, to cheer everybody up in the pandemic, people then say, “Hang on, does that mean you’re not worried about Derek or you’re not feeling sad about it?”
‘Maybe it’s that? Obviously she’s professional and doing her job, and they see her do that and think, “Why are you posting and posing and when you should be saving lives?”
‘Not really understanding that we’re all human and the most important thing is that we need to laugh and smile.
‘Nothing warrants this abuse.’
Derek is still fighting for his life in hospital, months after being taken in for treatment.
Kate announced he is officially coronavirus-free, but he is still battling the impact.
After uncertainty over his condition, she was left hopeful when he opened his eyes last month, with his family gathering to celebrate his birthday on FaceTime over the weekend.
Good Morning Britain continues on weekdays, at 6am, on ITV.
