Dax Shepard needs surgery after breaking multiple bones in a motorcycle accident.
The 45-year-old actor broke four ribs after he crashed while at a racetrack in California on Monday, with the Without A Paddle star saying he was ‘totally at blame’ for the incident.
Speaking on his podcast Armchair Expert on Tuesday, Shepard explained: ‘I was passing six guys on Sonoma Raceway on a motorcycle and I was braking very, very hard — hard enough that the back wheel was off the ground for a good 100 yards.
‘I was totally at blame. I thought I would be able to slide in between, but someone turned in and I was already under full brake and I couldn’t go anywhere.
‘I clipped their bumper and I went over the handlebars, and I landed pretty hard.’
Dax – who is married to The Good Place star Kristen Bell – called the accident a ‘little demoralising’, saying: ‘First time I’ve ever been down on the track. It was a bummer.’
He added that he was ‘thoroughly yelled at’ by track employees, saying: ‘They really let me have it and I was too injured to object, so I just took it on the chin.’
The actor actually went back on the track for two more sessions after icing his arm and shoulder for over an hour, but the following day, he realised the extent of his injuries and went to the emergency room.
Shepard said: ‘I’ve been at the hospital for seven hours today. The final tally was four broken ribs, the clavicle’s broken in three places, and I need surgery.’
He also re-injured fingers he broke earlier this year, and said he felt guilty for ‘actively doing something dangerous’.
After his podcast dropped, Dax took to Instagram to assure fans he was OK, showing off painful bruises and grazes on his chest and shoulder.
He wrote: ‘Thank you Armcherries for all the well wishes and concern. I’m in one piece and spirits are high :) Sorry for causing concern.’
After comedian Whitney Cummings pointed out his wife Kristen in the background, the 40-year-old Frozen star commented: ‘just politely shaking my head at his nonsense…’
It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia star Kaitlin Olson commented: ‘Remember 20 years ago when you showed up at my apartment looking exactly like this?? Nonsense is correct, @kristenanniebell’, with her husband Rob McElhenney writing: ‘I’m so proud of you for this photo and whatever dumbass thing you did to earn that road rash.’
This is the second accident daredevil Dax has had this year, after breaking his hand in May while off-roading.
Kristen told Ellen DeGeneres: ‘He was sitting on the edge of a cliff and he put his hand up just to look out and the weight of his arm tipped his Polaris RZR — is what he was on — over. You don’t get injured when you’re inside them, but I will tell you something, it did crush all the bones in his hand.
‘He’s very embarrassed by this injury because the cardinal rule is you don’t put your hands on the roll cage or outside the car at any time, that’s the only chance of injury.’
Despite his latest accident, Dax hasn’t been turned off motorcycles, although conceded he might be ‘willing to quit for the remainder of 2020’.
The Top Gear America host has two children with Kristen – daughters Lincoln, seven, and Delta, five.
