Manchester United remain keen on signing Dortmund superstar Jadon Sancho, despite finalising a deal for Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek.
Van de Beek, 23, will sign a five-year deal with th eclub this week after United agreed a £40.3m fee with his club Ajax.
The move escalated after talks over the weekend and has caught many supporters by surprise, given the column inches dedicated to England international Sancho.
United refused to meet Dortmund’s £108m asking price for the winger before the Bundesliga club’s August 8th deadline and the German club have publicly stated that they now expect to keep Sancho.
In that context, United’s move for van de Beek could be read as the club moving on for Sancho and prioritising other areas of the squad.
However, the Telegraph report that van de Beek’s transfer is in isolation to the club’s move from Sancho and that United remain desperate to sign the former Manchester City star.
Sancho, for his part, remains keen on a move to Old Trafford but Dortmund will need to compromise on their asking price.
United believe that Dortmund’s £108m valuation is failing to take the global pandemic into account and the asking price should therefore be reduced.
The club lose close to £5m for every home game that they play without fans at Old Trafford and the club are wary of breaking their transfer record during such financially difficult times.
Elsewhere, Solskjaer is keen on signing a centre-back to partner Harry Maguire.
The club have no plans of stripping Maguire of the captaincy after he was found guilty of resisting arrest, aggravated assault and several attempts of bribery following a holiday in Greece.
