Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year — well, that is unless like the EastEnders residents, you live in Albert Square — and this year’s festive season promises to be quite the unmissable one.
It’s been a big year for the BBC One soap, as it celebrated its 35th anniversary with a spectacular week of special episodes that centred on a boat crash on the Thames.
2020 also saw the soap take its first hiatus in history, but fear not, as it will be back with a bang next month.
However, it’s not just the return we have to look forward to, as — in typical Kate Oates and Jon Sen fashion — the soap’s producers are in the process of planning Christmas and beyond, and it sounds like this festive season will be one we won’t forget!
Kate told Metro.co.uk: ‘We are in the second draft of script stage for this Christmas, which is exciting.
‘We have an exciting return planned. It’s going to also be a part of a huge other story that will have been long-running.
‘Jon is so organised with the stories — we all are — so we kind of know what we are doing the Christmas after as well.
‘We have really longterm story arcs which is when you know you’re in a good place when you’re making a soap.
When you’ve got story arcs that can just run and run and run and you can see what the hot points and the hit points are, so not only have we got this Christmas very much on its way to completion, but we know where we’re going the following one.
‘EastEnders Christmas is very much on the agenda.’
EastEnders returns Monday, September 7 at 8:05pm on BBC One.
