Drag Race’s Trixie and Katya on why nothing is off-limits for UNHhhh season 5: ‘We always have a negative point of view’

RuPaul’s Drag Race alumni Trixie Mattell and Katya Zamolodchikova (or as your dad just calls her, Katya) are preparing to launch another series of their irreverence internet chat show UNHhhh, now in its fifth season.

Originally starting out as a web-based spin-off produced by Drag Race company World of Wonder, the show was an instant breakout hit and even moved over to Vice for a season, before both returning to YouTube last year.

Now, the two performers are getting ready to bring their unique brand of comedy back into a world that’s been shaken by death and trauma – how do they plan to ratify the two?

In a chat with Metro.co.uk, Trixie and Katya told us that UNHhhh works best when there’s no barriers to the discussion, and season five will be no different.

‘No matter what happens in the universe, we would still find something to talk about,’ Trixie explains. ‘Like, we’d still have a glaringly negative point of view most of the time, everything sucks.

‘We always talk about things that scare us or whatever, we’ll joke about things we’re uncomfortable with. ‘

Katya adds: ‘I feel bad for normal people who are going crazy about isolation, I think the show is good for people who need an extra little something [to cheer themselves up.]’

Past episodes have seen the pair ruminate on heavy topics including death, drug abuse and depression, but always through a darkly comic lens. This, they say, is something that will be continuing, despite extraneous circumstances.

But one thing the duo feel passionate about not discussing on the show is politicis, specially American politics – but it may not be for the reason you think.

‘It’s such a bummer, Katya explains. ‘We’re not a news service, you know?’

Trixie says that they ‘try to get people away from the worst parts of their lives,’ something which they both deem as ‘equally valuable’ as discussing the more macabre topics.

Ultimately, despite some production set-backs earlier in the year thanks to lockdown, UNHhhh is back and better than ever – in fact, despite living apart for filming, Trixie and Katya say they’re lucky in the sense that the show could even be allowed to film, thanks to the low-cost set-up and simple use of green-screen.

‘We found out that with another camera, we could both be on the green-screen from super far away. We can film basically like normal, even though we’re further away,’ Katya says.

‘Luckily, we happened to be on a show that’s green-screen that’s tacky and cheap. Imagine if we had to film love scenes? I wouldn’t be there.’

Series 5 of ‘UNHhhh’ continues weekly from 5th August at 8pm on WOW Presents Plus.
