Coronavirus news live: UK death toll at 46,201 and ‘major incident’ declared in Manchester over increasing infection rate

The UK UK’s death tolld from coronavirus stands at 46,201 after another eight people died in UK hospitals.

Five patients died in England, three in Wales and none in Scotland, while Northern Ireland is yet to release a daily figure. The totals only include the deaths of people who died in hospital settings, rather than in care homes or the wider community.

Meanwhile, a major incident has been declared in Greater Manchester in response to the area’s rising coronavirus infection rate.

Public health chiefs and senior figures from the police and local authorities attended a ‘gold command’ meeting today just days after a new local lockdown was announced.
