A fire has killed 11 people at a hotel being used as a Covid-19 facility in India’s second such incident in four days.

The blaze at the Hotel Swarna Palace in the city of Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh state broke out early on Sunday morning before being brought under control a few hours later.

Rescue teams evacuated people trapped in the multi-storey building, with 22 rushed to hospital, a police spokesman said.

An electrical short-circuit appeared to be the cause of the fire, the spokesman added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences and assured survivors of all possible support.
