‘Pockets of people flocking together it is a concern’ warns Dr Hilary Jones as he weighs in on Super Saturday

Dr Hilary Jones has been left concerned after thousands of Brits flocked to the pubs on Super Saturday.

The expert had urged people to hold off from going to their favourite spot for a few more weeks before enjoying a pint.

But despite his stark warning, pictures have since emerged from the evening seeing the likes of Soho in London packed full of thirsty punters.

‘I stayed at home,’ Dr Hilary insisted. ‘I was happy to do that. I was aware of doing everything outside, I’ll wait a few more days.

‘One knows from working in the media those are the worst scenes that occurred on Saturday night, most people behaved very responsibly, people were socially distancing – certainly in my area.

‘But, when you get these pockets of people flocking together it is a concern.

‘The virus is out there, we have lockdowns in one area and Spain has started to impliment local lockdowns too.

‘[Coronavirus] is still there, it is in Europe and here – we still need to be vigilant.’

Following the numerous street parties, the health secretary Matt Hancock praised the public and explained how most people ‘behaved responsibly’ during 4 July.

He said: ‘Well I think that from what I’ve seen, although there’s some pictures to the contrary, very, very largely people have acted responsibly.

‘The large proportion of people, the vast majority of people are, I think, doing the right thing’.

However, Mr Hancock did add: ‘But of course we’ll take action when we need to when… if the minority break the rules.’

Meanwhile, officers and business owners who worked in Soho have painted a completely different picture, calling scenes ‘out of control’.

Rafal Liszewski, 36, who works at Clonezone on Old Compton Street, said: ‘Around 1pm crowds started to arrive… quickly everything got out of control and by 8-9 pm it was a proper street party with people dancing and drinking.

‘Barely anyone was wearing masks and nobody respected social distancing… to be honest with that many people on one street it was physically impossible.’

Good Morning Britain continues weekdays at 6am on ITV.
