Maya Jama has opened up about the tragic death of an ex-boyfriend, who was shot outside a pub, and admits she thought ‘life was a fairytale’ prior to the incident.

The former BBC Radio 1 presenter revealed how her former love was shot and killed outside a pub in her hometown of Bristol when she was 16, explaining that she ‘went through a lot’.

In an interview for Cosmopolitan’s September issue, Maya said: ‘With my boyfriend passing, it gave me a fearless approach to things. I felt like life was really short.

‘Out of everything that [has] happened in my life, that was a reality check on a massive scale. At 16 you think the world is a fairytale and it took me out of that. It made me even more determined.’

The horrific incident pushed Maya, 25, into pursuing her dreams of a career in broadcasting but she realises her path could have gone the other way.

‘If it hadn’t been for going through those difficulties, my whole perception of life would be different,’ the presenter explained.

‘I don’t let myself get wound up over smaller things because I know what it’s like to feel actual pain. I don’t dwell on a lot.’

She continued: ‘Statistically I should have gone off the rails then, and it feels like my career was the thing that saved that from happening because I had hope and there was something to look forward to.

‘When you go through trauma, if you don’t have something to look forward to, that’s when you can get stuck in a rut.’

Maya is currently sunning herself in Ibiza after jetting off last week in a private jet for a much-needed getaway with her close girlfriends.

Last week, the TV star found herself at the centre of social media chatter after getting a shout-out on Drake’s new song with Headie One, Only You Freestyle.

Chubbs might jam this yute for a chain,’ Drake spits when freestyling the opening line, before quickly adding: ‘And gave it to a sweet one, called that Maya Jama.’

Maya has not publicly addressed the flattering compliment but fans were more interested to know what her ex-boyfriend, Stormzy, had to think about fellow rapper Drake mentioning his former love.
