Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has praised rumoured transfer target Thiago Alcantara though refused to confirm if the Bayern Munich midfielder would be heading to Anfield this summer.
The 29-year-old’s contract with the German champions expires next year and he has asked the club to allow him to leave so he can try a new challenge in another league.
Liverpool are believed to be the frontrunners for his signature, with the Spaniard already agreeing personal terms and putting his house in Munich up for sale after talks with Klopp.
Although Klopp is well known for not discussing transfer targets publicly, he has once again hailed Thiago – though insists Liverpool have yet to wrap up any incoming signings for the summer.
‘I have no idea who will play for me next year, there is nothing to say at the moment,’ he told Sky Germany.
‘Thiago Alcantara is a great player, but also a Bayern Munich player. That’s actually all there is to say. There’s nothing to say!’
Karl-Heinz Rummenigge confirmed recently that Thiago had asked to leave Bayern this summer, though the Bundesliga club are adamant they will not let him leave on the cheap.
With just a year to run on his contract, Liverpool only value the midfielder at around £22million – but Bayern have set their asking price closer to £36m.
‘He wants to leave this summer. But I have to say honestly, the fees that circulate in the media, I have to laugh at that,’ said Rummenigge on Thursday.
‘We will not have a summer sale at Bayern Munich. We will only consider selling if the numbers are right.’
Thiago has enjoyed another strong campaign in the Bundesliga this season and any move will likely have to wait until the end of August, with Bayern unwilling to let him leave until after the Champions League next month.
