Good Morning Britain’s Dr Sarah warns Kanye West could do himself ‘more harm’ if bipolar goes untreated

Kanye West could do himself ‘more harm’ if his bipolar disorder continues to go untreated, Good Morning Britain’s Dr Sarah Jarvis has warned.

The All Of The Lights rapper has sparked concern for his mental health in recent weeks after announcing he was running for US president, breaking down in tears during his campaign rally and posting a string of tweets claiming he has been trying to divorce wife Kim Kardashian

Kim, who shares four children with the rapper, released a statement yesterday acknowledging Kanye’s current bipolar episode and said the family are ‘powerless’ to convince him to seek medical help given the complexity of his disorder.

Explaining Kanye’s mental health battle, Dr Sarah said on GMB on Thursday: ‘Looking back he’s repeatedly behaved in a very extreme way, rushing up on-stage and claiming someone else should have had an award and then having to apologise later,’ in reference to him interrupting Taylor Swift on-stage at the MTV VMAs in 2009.

Dr Sarah continued: ‘What we’re seeing here is someone who’s in a manic phase, so there are two extremes in bi-polar – depression or mania – and when you have mania or hypo-mania, which is what it’s called if it’s less extreme, you genuinely think you can rule the world.’

Recalling her own experience with treating mental health patients, Dr Sarah went on: ‘I’ve had patients who thought they were going to marry Prince Harry, another patient who believed they were going to set up the next Facebook and become a billionaire, so they had spent the entire of the family’s savings before their partner found out about it.’

The medical expert then explained that someone going through Kanye’s current episode would likely be ‘sectioned under the mental health act to get them into hospital because [they] don’t have insight into what’s going on’.

However she added: ‘But of course, he’s got all the money so he can evade it and get round it in some way so he could do himself more harm.’

In her heartfelt statement about her husband’s mental health condition, Kim said: ‘As many of you know, Kanye has bipolar disorder. Anyone who has this or has a loved one in their life who does, knows how complicated and painful it is to understand…

‘Those that understand mental illness or even compulsive behaviour know that the family is powerless unless the member is a minor.

‘People who are unaware or far removed from this experience can be judgemental and not understand that the individual themselves have to engage in the process of getting help no matter how hard family and friends try.’

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
