Mikel Arteta’s hopes of landing Thomas Partey have been given a further boost after the deal was given the green light by Arsenal’s technical director Edu.
Partey has emerged as the club’s top summer target, with the Atletico Madrid midfielder keen on a move to the Emirates.
Arsenal are confident they will wrap up a deal for the 27-year-old and Arteta views him as a key arrival.
Head of international recruitment Francis Cagigao, who brought in Gabriel Martinelli, was the man who initially identified Partey as a key signing, according to the Daily Mail, and the move has now been approved by both Arteta and Edu.
Financing the deal may prove difficult, however.
Funds will need to be raised to sign the Ghanaian, with Matteo Guendouzi, Alexandre Lacazette and Lucas Torreira all facing the exit door in order for Arteta to get his man.
Arteta can only spend money raised from sales this summer or bring in loan deals.
Partey has a release clause of £43million but the Gunners are hoping to land him for less than that. They will still, however, need to sell assets in order to sign him.
Arsenal are still hoping to extend Pierre Emerick Aubameyang’s stay, while they think it will be impossible to shift Mesut Ozil this summer.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan is expected to make a loan move to Roma permanent, which will free up some space on the wage bill but another sale is likely to be required to raise the required transfer fee.
