Dr Hilary Jones announces break from Good Morning Britain after four months of coronavirus coverage

Dr Hilary Jones has announced he will be taking a break from Good Morning Britain after four months leading their coronavirus coverage.

The medical expert has been nicknamed the ‘pandemic pin-up’ by Piers Morgan due to his daily updates and clarity on the latest developments of the covid-19 virus.

But, just a week after Piers and Susanna left for their two-month summer break, Dr Hilary has announced he’ll be taking some time off too.

Appearing on today’s episode alongside Charlotte Hawkins and Adil Ray, the group joked that he will be missing in action from next Monday.

‘Where would we be without him?!’ Adil joked. ‘He’s just told me he’s off next week! You can’t leave.’

To be fair, if anyone deserves a bit of time off, it’s him!

Dr Hilary has become the go-to guy for Good Morning Britain when it comes to simplifying the latest rules and regulations over coronavirus.

He’s also not been afraid to be critical of government plans, questioning this week why they decided to wait 11 days to implement a mandatory mask rule in shops and public areas.

The doctor also laid out any hopes of a vaccine or recovery, warning that new research suggests that the virus is airborne – so may last longer in areas than initially anticipated.

Speaking last week about his role in the coronavirus coverage, Dr Hilary said: ‘We are living through a piece of medical history that many of us have never known and it is really important to get this right.

‘We have covered some really good stuff and the producers have done a fantastic job working those long night shift, getting all that research together for us.

‘We have got it right so far, we have a good balance and we’re giving people a lot of good guidance.’

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
