Coronavirus news live: UK death toll passes 45,000 and Rishi Sunak rejects plea to help those excluded from Covid rescue packages

Another 85 people have died in the UK after testing positive for coronavirus, bringing the official death toll to 45,053.

Figures from the Department for Health and Social Care cover fatalities in all settings including hospitals, care homes and the wider community.

Meanwhile, Chancellor Rishi Sunak has rejected fresh pleas to provide help for people who were not eligible for the government’s coronavirus support schemes.

He was under renewed pressure to revisit the schemes after campaigners delivered a petition signed by more than 250,000 people including 220 MPs from all major parties.
