A further 119 people have died after contracting coronavirus, bringing the UK death toll – as of Tuesday – to 45,878.
The latest figures released by the Government cover fatalities in all settings, including hospitals, care homes and the wider community.
Since the beginning of the crisis, 300,692 people have tested positive in the UK, with 581 additional cases recorded in the last 24 hours.
Meanwhile, the Government has signed a deal with GlaxoSmithKline and Sanofi Pasteur for 60 million doses of a potential Covid-19 vaccine.
If the vaccine proves successful, the UK could begin to vaccinate priority groups, such as frontline health and social care workers and those at increased risk from coronavirus, as early as the first half of next year, the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) said.
