A further seven people have died after contracting coronavirus, bringing the UK death toll to 45,759, as the total number of lab-confirmed cases passes 300,000.
The figures released by the Government yesterday cover fatalities in all settings, including hospitals, care homes and the wider community.
Meanwhile, a charity has warned the coronavirus crisis could result in up to 40,000 stray or homeless dogs.
Dogs Trust says that the financial fallout from the pandemic may force people to give up their pets or even put them to sleep if they cannot afford to keep them.
The charity says that in the year following the last major economic crisis – the financial crash of 2008 – the number of abandoned dogs rose by more than a quarter.
