Dr Hilary Jones has warned that relaxing coronavirus lockdown rules in the UK is ‘at our peril’ as he pointed out ‘we haven’t really got through the first wave’.
The television doctor joined Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid on today’s episode of Good Morning Britain where he touched on Leicester going back into quarantine.
Reflecting on how the pandemic played out, Dr Hilary began: ‘We were very complacent about this [coronavirus]. We didn’t take it seriously enough, people carried on living normally.
‘Suddenly we had this upsurge in cases. We had many deaths, we’ve probably had an excess of 70,00 deaths.
‘But already people are talking about getting back to normal. We haven’t really got through the first wave, let alone worrying about the second wave which is inevitable now.’

He continued: ‘People have lost the fear that they had originally. People were frightened to touch their face with their hands.
‘All that detail has been forgotten. People are forgetting to wash their hands, people are taking non-essential travel. We do this at our peril.
‘We’re seeing global cases increasing in South America, India, around the world, this is getting worse, not better.
‘If we relax, it’s in our peril it really is.’
On Monday’s show, Dr Hilary warned that a second wave of coronavirus ‘could be worse than the first’.
‘We’ve got more cases than we did in January, so potentially, there is a possibility the second peak will be worse than the first,’ he said.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
