Coronavirus news live: UK death toll at 43,575 and Leicester becomes first British city to go back into lockdown

Another 25 people have died from coronavirus in the UK, bringing the death toll to 43,575.

The figure covers fatalities across all settings including hospitals, care homes and the wider community. Since Covid-19 broke out in the UK, a total of 311,965 have tested positive for the virus.

Meanwhile, Leicester has become the first British county to have coronavirus restrictions reimposed following a surge in cases, with schools and non-essential shops to close once more.

Speaking in the Commons on Monday night, the health secretary announced that non-essential retail stores in Leicester must close again from Tuesday, with the measures applying also to the outer areas of the city, such as Oadby, Birstall and Glenfield.
