Strictly Come Dancing bosses are planning on welcoming the show’s first-ever all-female couple when it returns later this year.
The BBC series is hoping to secure a high-profile LGBTQ+ woman to make up one half of its inaugural same-sex couple after deciding that an all-male couple would be ‘too predictable’.
This comes after reports last month teased producers had tipped Johannes Radebe as the front-runner to be paired up with a male celebrity.
‘Obviously “diversity” is the keyword in television today and, of course, Strictly wants to be progressive,’ an insider began.
‘The plan is to have a same-sex couple, and two women. Dancing On Ice featured two men, so it would be good to offer something different and keep pushing boundaries.’
The source continued to The Sun: ‘While Johannes would love to dance with a guy, that would almost be too predictable.
‘But all of the pros, male and female, have said they would be delighted to be partnered with someone of their own gender.’
According to the publication, Strictly bosses are eyeing up Sex Education star Gillian Anderson for the landmark move, as well as Jessie J, TV presenter Steph McGovern, singer Chelcee Grimes and former Great British Bake Off host Sandi Toksvig.
Johannes and Graziano Di Prima made TV history in November last year when they performed a beautiful contemporary dance to Emeli Sande – the first same-sex dance in its 15-year tenure.
The upcoming series of Strictly has seemingly been under threat as bosses have had to come up with ideas to keep the show going within social distancing rules.
Despite this, head judge Shirley Ballas said that she was certain the show would return in 2020.
