Just last year, Sia revealed that she was a mum after adopting a child, and in May she confirmed that she had actually adopted two sons.
And now, she’s already a grandmother at the age of 44.
Life comes at you real fast.
The Chandelier singer has revealed that she is a grandmother after one of her 19-year-old sons welcomed two children.
Sia, full name Sia Furler, dropped the bombshell news on Zane Lowe’s Apple Music show, saying: ‘My youngest son just had two babies. I’m just immediately horrified.
‘No, I’m cool. They call me Nana. I’m trying to get them to call me Lovey, like Kris [Jenner]. I’m like, “Call me Lovey”.’
Lovey or Nana, it’s quite a jump for Sia, who only became a mother in 2019 after adopting two 18-year-olds who were ageing out of the foster system.
And the Australian star opened up about her journey to motherhood with Lowe, saying that she was ‘jaded’ by the foster system.
Sia said: ‘I’m a little bit jaded now after investigating the foster system as much as I have done in the last year. It’s failing us. Not in my experience, in my sons’ experience. They’ve been in 18 different locations in their 18 years.’
She explained that her sons could have actually stayed in the system until they were 21, and while going through the adoption process, she unearthed her sons’ history in the system without being told.
Sia said: ‘Started out as a pretty massive rollercoaster. They told me one thing, I discovered another. But I just stayed really like a kind of Al-Anon Ninja. I just kept really strong boundaries.
‘I would say, “You could do this, or you could go back to where you came from” which is not a nice life. It’s not a good life, and I’d say, “I’m doing this because I’m your mother. I love you. I have no other agenda other than the fact that I love you. I don’t want to see you in prison.”’
Sia said that her sons had suffered ‘conditioning and complex trauma’ in foster care, and that they have been enrolled in trauma programmes.
The Cheap Thrills singer said: ‘One recently came out, and he’s just blossoming and is the light of my life. I love him so much’; while her other son is still ‘processing’ his own trauma, but she believes ‘he can manage’.
‘It took me until I was 41, I think, to deal with my early developmental trauma,’ she said.
‘I don’t want that for them, but you can’t force anyone.
‘Trauma has to come out when you’re in a safe environment, when you’re ready — psychologically ready. So, I’m just trying to do my best for them.’
Both of Sia’s sons are young black men, and the star admitted that she is learning a lot from them about white privilege and their daily struggles.
She said: ‘I’m embarrassed that it took me to adopt two Black sons to really understand what they go through on a daily basis.
‘There are things to do. We can actually act, and we can actually try and get justice for Breonna Taylor and Elijah McClain.
‘I’ve very scared for my children. I love them very much. I’ve only experienced white privilege and I know that now. I am fully aware of how much I’ve experienced white privilege, and now I have these two Black sons who tell me how it really is.’
Sia first confirmed that she had adopted in 2019 when speaking to GQ in January – although the news was overshadowed by her asking DJ Diplo for no-strings sex.
She said: ‘This year I wrote him a text, and I said, “Hey, listen, you’re like one of five people that I’m sexually attracted to, and now that I’ve decided to be single for the rest of my life and I just adopted a son, I don’t have time for a relationship… If you’re interested in some no-strings sex, then hit me up”.’
The star had previously signalled she wanted a family when she offered to provide a forever home to a teenage boy featured in the HBO documentary Foster.
