Gary Neville has dismissed Manchester United’s chances of signing Jadon Sancho for just £50m after reports emerged that they were only willing to spend that amount on the Borussia Dortmund winger.
The Red Devils have been widely expected to make a big for the England international this summer, but the coronavirus pandemic has cast doubt on how much clubs around the world will have to spend in the transfer window.
Dortmund value the 20 year old at around £100m and are sticking to their guns, despite the global health crisis.
However, reports emerged on Tuesday that Manchester United are hoping to take advantage of the fact that Dortmund’s revenues have been badly hit over the last three months and may be able to get Sancho for half that figure.
Neville cannot see that happening, believing Dortmund are much to big a club to be pressured into a deal like that, and let manager Ole Gunnar Solskjae know.
‘I think you might have to pay a little bit more than that, Ole!’ Neville told Sky Sports.
‘I think that’s the problem, some clubs will believe that other clubs will get desperate and sell players on the cheap.
‘But I’m not sure you can bully clubs like Borussia Dortmund.’
The former United defender would love to see Sancho sign for the club and praised the youngster for his decision to leave Manchester City as a teenager in search of first team football in Germany.
‘At the time you questioned his decision to leave Manchester City but they weren’t putting youngsters in the first-team at that time,’ continued the Sky Sports commentator.
‘What he’s done is giving himself a wonderful experience, furthered his career.’
Meanwhile, Dortmund are standing firm on one of their prized assets, with CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke insisting there will be no movement on their valuation of Sancho.
‘I don’t think a club will pay the sum [£100m]. There is also no coronavirus discount on him,’ Watzke told Sport 1.
United took their unbeaten run to 15 matches on Tuesday night with a 3-0 win over Brighton and with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side gaining momentum, the signing of Sancho would make them a fearsome prospect next season.
