Flicking through the comments, the controversial journalist started to get aggravated, adding: ‘There are people supporting it but a few people saying, “well hang on, we don’t normally do this in the summer.”‘
Calling out a mysterious Paul, the father-of-four shouted: ‘Paul on Twitter, “Well hang on, there aren’t usually free school meals, why should they?”
‘He said, “why should this year be different?” Really Paul? Really Paul on Twitter, why should this year be different?
‘You follow this year for the last six months and you don’t understand why there might be a particular issue for underprivileged kids who can’t afford to eat really? You want to put that on Twitter?’
Turning his attention to another user, named Lee, Piers read out their tweet demandinng this should happen every holiday.
‘Really Lee?’ Piers quizzed. ‘Are you reliant on a free school meal to eat? Because if you’re not, shut up Lee on Twitter.’
Following the breaks, both Piers and Susanna Reid return to the news story where they read out part of Marcus’s letter.
‘This is not about politics this is about humanity, looking at ourselves in the mirror and thinking we did everything we could to protect those who can’t for whatever reason or circumstances protect themselves,’ he wrote.
‘Political affiliations aside, can we not all agree that no child should be going to bed hungry?’
Piers spat: ‘Can the Prime Minister Boris Johnson not read that line and feel his conscience pricked? And feel these are utter exceptional times.
‘As you keep telling us Prime Minister, unprecedented circumstances require unprecedented action by the government. You said you’d do whatever it takes, whatever it takes.’
Good Morning Britain continues weekdays at 6am on ITV.
