Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid have sent their love to Kate Garraway following her heartbreaking interview on Good Morning Britain, last Friday.
Before getting into the show, the presenting duo explained how the mum-of-two is ‘going through hell’ after she explained how her husband Derek Draper could be locked in a coma forever.
The proud dad was rushed to hospital back in March when he struggled to breathe, and after being diagnosed with coronavirus, he was then put into a coma to give his lung a rest.
Since then, doctors have carried out an MRI scan which has shown the damage the virus has done to the 52-year-old’s body, seeing Kate fear the worst.
While he is in the clear for Covid-19, Kate explained how he has been left with a hole in his heart, in need of kidney dialysis, and has also become diabetic following damage to his pancreas.
Talking about her current nightmare, Susanna said: ‘Just before we get started on the protest, I think we both want to send our love to our colleague and friend Kate Garraway.
‘We both watched her interview on Good Morning Britain on Friday, millions of you watched as well as she told you and us about her situation with Derek, it is absolutely heartbreaking for the family.’
The journalist went on: ‘Then she did an interview in The Sun over the weekend as well, huge, huge love to Kate.
‘She is going through hell and there is hope still of course, but she said they were hoping for that miracle and we’re all hoping for that with her. So huge love to Kate this morning.’
It come after Kate spoke to The Sun about her husband’s health, and how she is coping with their two children, Darcey, 14, and William, 10, at home.
She explained: ‘There is no reason to think that his hearing isn’t working. And he’s opened his eyes, so the hope is that he moves through stages of consciousness and emerges.’
Alongside her children, Kate has been FaceTiming her hubby every night with the hope that hearing their voices could help to wake him up.
While packing an old suitcase of clothes to take to Derek in hospital, Kate discovered a card he wrote for her some time ago.
‘It says how much he loves me, how proud of me he is, and that he was feeling so good about us. It was just so romantic and it feels so odd reading it now he’s in this state,’ she said.
‘You know that feeling, when you’re driving along and someone pulls out in front of you and your heart lurches, so you drive really cautiously for the next five minutes and then calm down?
‘Well, it’s like you’re constantly in that heart lurch stage, without the calming down bit.’
Good Morning Britain continues weekdays at 6am on ITV.
