Patrice Evra has hit back at Manchester United fans who want the club to sell Paul Pogba, insisting they ‘need’ the Frenchman.
Pogba has struggled with an ankle problem throughout the 2019/20 season but made his long-awaited return off the bench in a 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur.
The 27-year-old made a big impact when he was brought on by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, winning the penalty – after some silky skill to ease past Eric Dier – which new midfield partner Bruno Fernandes made no mistake in dispatching.
His future has been the source of much discussion ever since he returned to Old Trafford from Juventus and some sections of the United support have grown impatient with him.
But Evra has hit back at those who want him to leave United and thinks he is still one of their most important players.
‘I talk with Paul often, he just couldn’t wait, he was like a baby. He wanted to play football,’ Evra told Sky Sports.
‘I think this was really important for Paul because he didn’t have an easy start.
‘Especially when Bruno Fernandes joined the team people started saying, “oh, we don’t need Paul any more”.
‘United need Paul. People have to stop saying, “We don’t need Paul”. United need Paul Pogba.’
Roy Keane believes Pogba should be of great importance to United, but wants to see more consistency from the midfielder.
‘They need him at his best,’ he added. ‘He needs to be at his best, it can’t be where he turns up every two or three weeks.
‘He must recognise that himself. We’ve seen his talent, anyone who knows anything about football will tell you Pogba is a talented player.
‘But the key is if you’re playing for a big club is to be consistent.
‘That’ll make him feel better, coming back and having an influence on the game.’
