Liverpool have dedicated a special message to Marcus Rashford after the Manchester United striker successfully campaigned for children to receive free school meals during the summer.
Rashford has been instrumental in persuading the Government to reverse the decision after it was initially decided that children would not receive free meal vouchers outside of term time.
The United and England forward penned an open letter to MPs and gave a direct plea to Boris Johnson, urging the Prime Minister to act.
On Tuesday, it was announced that free school meals will be made available throughout the summer, ensuring that around 1.3 million children in England will benefit as a result.
And following the news, Liverpool posted a special tribute message to Rashford and Manchester United.
Liverpool’s message read: ‘Children in our region will benefit because of the actions of this remarkable role model.
‘From Liverpool With Love.’
Rashford is due to return to action with United on Friday as they restart their Premier League campaign with a game against Tottenham.
Speaking about the Government’s U-turn over the decision, Rashford said: ‘I was obviously shocked. It’s a big decision for someone to make.
‘I’m just grateful that the Prime Minister did change his decision and he understood and I spoke to him earlier on today [Tuesday] and just thanked him for that.
‘It was a nice conversation to have with him and just that we understood each other.’
Rashford was also personally thanked by Johnson during a phone call with the Prime Minister.
‘He was just obviously saying thank you for using what I’ve sort of built in a positive manner,’ said Rashford.
‘We were just thanking each other really because he didn’t have to do what he done and neither did I.
‘He was just grateful that someone had an opinion and just shared it with people and just been that voice for people that didn’t really have the platform to speak out as much as they would like to.’
