T.I.’s daughter Deyjah teared up talking about her father taking her for ‘virginity tests’, saying she was looking at him differently now.
Last year, the rapper made headlines when he claimed he brought his 18-year-old daughter to the gynaecologist each birthday to ensure her hymen was intact.
And on the latest episode of T.I. & Tiny: Friend & Family Hustle, Deyjah reacted to her sex life becoming public knowledge.
The family was on holiday when Deyjah started being tagged in posts about the comments her father made on the podcast Ladies Like Us.
The teenager said : ‘Things are completely uncomfortable for me right now. We’re all together in this house, so I have to see my dad and be around him. And we’re in a foreign country so it’s not like I can leave and get away.
‘I’m scrolling on Twitter, and I see that I’ve been tagged in a post. The only word that I saw was “gynaecologist” and I didn’t even need to read the whole title ’cause I just knew.
‘My heart sank — very shocked, hurt, angry, embarrassed.’
Speaking to her cousins, Deyjah said: ‘I mean, honestly, I’m embarrassed definitely for sure.
‘I’m trying to put it in the back of my mind so I’m not really thinking about it. I know it’s not healthy. But I’ve been doing that since I was a child.’
The teenager revealed the doctors visits had been happening since she was ’14 or 15’, adding: ‘It’s not like I could have said no.’
Deyjah noted that her dad’s reaction would be entirely different towards any of her brothers having sex, saying: ‘I do think my dad treats me differently than the boys when it comes to the subject of sex and supervision. My dad even jokes with [my brother] King about becoming a baby daddy. He would never joke like that with me.’
And Deyjah began to get emotional as she addressed how her father’s comments had affected their relationship.
She said: ‘I just don’t really care to be around him right now. I’ll be a better parent. I mean, I’m not saying he’s a bad parent, I’m not saying that. I’m just saying when it comes to stuff like this, I’m just gonna be more connected mentally, emotionally.
‘I don’t want to say I’m looking at him differently, but… Really, I mean more so our relationship, I’m going to look at differently. This situation is just a little traumatising for me.
‘I need more time to figure out what I want to say, but things are completely awkward and uncomfortable between me and my dad. Prior to all of this happening, our relationship was pretty decent, but after all of this, it’s changed, honestly.’
In a confessional, T.I., 39, insisted he was ‘speaking in past tense’ when he spoke about getting a doctor to check Deyjah’s hymen was intact – despite a hymen not proving anything about virginity.
The Whatever You Like star said: ‘I told a joke that was laced in truth, also [with] a lot of major embellishments. I was speaking past tense. People thought I was speaking present day.’
The rapper, real name Clifford Harris Jr, sparked outrage with his comments last November, when he told Nazanin and Nadia of Ladies Like Us: ‘We’ll go and sit down and the doctor will come and talk and the doctor’s maintaining a high level of professionalism. He’s like, “You know sir, I have to, in order to share information” — I’m like, “Deyjah they want you to sign this so we can share information. Is there anything you wouldn’t want me to know? Oh, ok. See doc, no problem.”
‘And so then they come and say, “Well I just want you to know that there are other ways besides sex that the hymen can be broken, like bike riding, athletics, horseback riding and just other forms of athletic physical activity.”
‘I say, “Look doc, she don’t ride no horses, she don’t ride no bike, she don’t play no sports. Just check the hymen please and give me back my results expeditiously”.’
‘I will say as of her 18th birthday, her hymen is still intact.’
T.I., who shares Deyjah with singer Ms Niko, appeared on Jada Pinkett Smith’s Red Table Talk to apologise publicly to his daughter and explain his comments.
‘Let me set this record straight. I never said I was in any exam room, that was an assumption. That is a falsity. I never said it was being done present day as an 18 year old,’ he stated.
‘I never said that her mother wasn’t present. She was present every time. All of this false narrative has just been sensationalised.’
Addressing Deyjah’s feelings about the check-ups, T.I. continued: ‘There was never any objection. She did have a problem with me talking about it, however, and I understand that. And I am incredibly apologetic to her for that.’
