Harry Potter star Bonnie Wright has issued a message of ‘love and belonging’ following author JK Rowling’s ‘anti-trans’ comments.
Rowling, 54, has been criticised for making a series of comments over the weekend that have been deemed ‘transphobic’, but she’s since insisted she isn’t a TERF – Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminist.
Bonnie, who starred as Ginny Weasley in the franchise, threw her support behind the transgender community and posted on Twitter on Wednesday night.
‘If Harry Potter was a source of love and belonging for you, that love is infinite and there to take without judgment or question. Transwomen are Women. I see and love you, Bonnie x,’ the 29-year-old actress penned.
A number of Harry Potter stars have spoken out following JK’s controversial remarks, including Daniel Radcliffe.
The actor broke his silence to also stand with the transgender community, stating: ‘Transgender women are women.’
Daniel and Bonnie join a slew of other Harry Potter alum in responding to JK’s comments, including Cho Chang star Katie Leung and Evanna Lynch, who played Luna Lovegood.
Emma Watson also shared her support for transgender charities by retweeting a post by transgender columnist Paris Lees.
Paris’ tweet read: ‘Hi everyone, just a quick note to say that if you’d like to donate to organisations that support black trans women – who are having an especially tough time at the moment, and facing hostility from every direction – @VICE has compiled a list.’
Readdressing her ‘anti-trans’ comments on Wednesday night in an essay, Rowling wrote: ‘
Addressing her trans comments, Rowling then stated: ‘So I want trans women to be safe.
‘At the same time, I do not want to make natal girls and women less safe.
‘When you throw open the doors of bathrooms and changing rooms to any man who believes or feels he’s a woman – and, as I’ve said, gender confirmation certificates may now be granted without any need for surgery or hormones – then you open the door to any and all men who wish to come inside. That is the simple truth.’
In her original tweet, Rowling said: ‘”eople who menstruate”. I’m sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?’ in response to an article.
