EastEnders star Letitia Dean reveals a huge secret about Roly the dog in scenes which can be seen in Monday’s episode of Secrets From The Square.
Speaking to Stacey Dooley about one of the soap’s best-known pets, Letitia — who portrays Sharon Watts — said: ‘Roly, the poodle — who I resemble today! — he was actually [soap co-creator] Julia Smith’s dog in real life!’
‘Leslie Grantham [Den Watts] used to say — because I had a perm back in the day — if I bobbed under the camera like that, he said I used to look like Roly’s a*s!’
Longtime viewers will remember that Roly featured heavily in the soap’s initial years, and was often seen in the Queen Vic — where he resided with Den and Angie (Anita Dobson), and then, later, Pat (Pam St Clement) and Frank (Mike Reid).
Frank’s mum Mo (Edna Dore) became incredibly fond of him during the late ’80s, and took him out for walks on a daily basis.
In addition to discussing Roly, both Letitia and co-star Adam Woodyatt — who portrays Ian Beale — recalled a time in which they were both told off on set.
Adam said: ‘A combination of Tish, Sue [Tully, who played Michelle Fowler], me and Paul Medford, we got sent home one Friday afternoon, and got told to come back in the following day, because we just got the giggles.’
‘We got properly, properly told off and sent home’
Letitia added: ‘It was very strict.
‘We weren’t allowed to have any egos as kids.’
One to watch: Monday 29 June at 8pm on BBC One.
