Piers Morgan has detailed his friend Kate Garraway’s ‘gut-wrenchingly sad’ ordeal as her husband Derek Draper continues fighting in hospital.
Derek, who married Kate in 2005, has been in hospital since 30 March when he was diagnosed with Covid-19, and subsequently placed in a coma.
In his Mail Online column, Piers reveals the harsh reality of Kate’s ordeal as she and her children face the possibility of Derek never waking from his coma.
‘Now, agonisingly, Kate doesn’t even know if she will ever get Derek home again, let alone to renew those vows. It’s unbearably, gut-wrenchingly sad,’ Piers wrote.
The Good Morning Britain host then recalled a conversation he had with Kate via text message, in which she said: ‘It’s a living hell, to be honest…
‘I keep saying I can’t bear it, but then somehow do. It’s managing feelings and holding in the same moment your greatest hope, greatest fear and total uncertainty about which way it’s going to go – all the time. I don’t think I’ve ever loved him more or felt more at risk of losing him.’
Kate, 53, also told her GMB co-host that she ‘did crash’ weeks ago but refuses to ‘give up’ on her ‘massive positivity’ because Derek is the ‘core of [her] life’.
‘But at the same time I have absolute uncertainty,’ she added.
Piers, 55, also revealed the moment he knew Kate wasn’t coping well, writing: ‘I knew she was struggling when I saw photos in the papers taken doing the final Thursday night clap for carers last week, and she looked utterly exhausted and was wiping away tears.’
Earlier this month, Kate sat down for her first interview since Derek was taken to hospital and revealed that while he is now coronavirus-free, the disease has significantly affected his entire body.
‘He’s very, very sick. And as time goes on… It’s a virus, it’s like a computer virus I think,’ Kate explained.
‘The doctors manage one bit extraordinarily well and there seems to be a flicker of hope, and then other things emerge and they’re fighting that. It’s affected him from the top of his head to the tip of his toes.’
