Dr Hilary has warned that a second peak of coronavirus will happen as people flocked to beaches yesterday and broke social distancing rules.
Appearing on Good Morning Britain with Ben Shephard and Charlotte Hawkins, the GP denounced the actions of citizens, including the half a million people flocked to Dorset.
Health Secretary Matt Hancock has warned after the scenes yesterday that public beaches in England could be closed, and Dr Hilary admitted that people were perhaps convinced to take trips to the sea due to changing media coverage.
‘People were fearful of the virus [before], they were scared, ‘ he explained. ‘Now we’re seeing pictures of mass gatherings, celebrations, people in parks.
‘The whole coverage of the pandemic has changed, and that’s why we have this thinking that the virus has gone away – it absolutely hasn’t.’
He continued: ‘We’re going to see a second peak if people, that minority of people, continue to behave as we’ve seen.’
Yesterday, a major incident was declared in Bournemouth on the hottest day of the year, as police had to deal with anti-social behaviour on the beaches.
Mr Hancock urged the British people not to ‘throw away’ all their hard work in helping to contain the spread of the virus during lockdown.
‘People are questioning of this guidance, because there hasn’t been enough clarity,’ Dr Hilary explained.
He urged: ‘We need people to accept what is correct and what is appropriate and responsible.’
Hilary also explained how the virus can spread in large crowds, as Liverpool fans also broke social distancing rules to celebrate their first Premier League victory in 30 years.
At the time of writing, over 300,000 people in the UK have been diagnosed with Covid-19, with the death toll now standing at above 43,000.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
