The UK’s coronavirus death toll now stands at 43,081 after another 154 people died after testing positive for the virus.
The figures, released by the Department of Health and Social Care on Wednesday, include deaths in all settings including in care homes and the community.
Meanwhile, health leaders warn there is ‘real risk’ a second wave of coronavirus and are calling for an urgent review to make sure the UK is ready for it.
In an open letter to the leaders of all the UK political parties published in the British Medical Journal, a number of health leaders call for a ‘rapid and forward-looking assessment’ of the state of national preparedness in the event of a renewed flare-up.
It comes after the PM announced the easing of many lockdown measures which will come into effect on 4 July when people in England will be allowed to go to pubs, see family and go on UK ‘staycations.’
