Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan heaps praise on Ayushmann Khurrana as Gulabo Sitabo finally released

Amitabh Bachchan was full of praise for Gulabo Sitabo co-star Ayushmann Khurrana, giving us bromance goals.

The Bollywood legend starred opposite Ayushmann for the first time in their new film – which was released on Amazon Prime today (12 June), two months after the original air date.

And, speaking to Metro.co.uk about their latest project, he couldn’t help but give his castmate, 35, a shout-out.

Speaking about the bond they forged behind the camera, the 77-year-old said: ’It has been a pleasure and an honour to be with Ayushmann on set, and as a co-artist.

‘We didn’t have much time off set to mingle, but I’m certain that when we do, it shall be equally pleasurable.’

Hopefully we can third-wheel their next mingling session.

Amitabh made headlines earlier this week when he took aim at any suggestion that his castmate was an ‘up and coming’ presence in Bollywood, recalling his lengthy career so far.

In a recent interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Ayushmann was described as a ‘rising star’, to which he replied: ‘Correction, Ayushmann Khurrana is not a rising star… He is a very risen, prominent star, living up to his name Ayushmann which means long lasting.

‘We are all considered professionals and when we work on a project, we all wish to bring the best output in the interests of the film. If we do not enjoy the company of our colleagues, the project suffers.

‘The current younger generation is brilliant, each and every one of them. They are so well prepared, confident, equipped with the very best talent and faultless. I learn in their company, for I lack what they possess, and consider myself fortunate that I get an opportunity to do so.’

Amitabh has become a firm staple of the acting industry, making his full film debut all the way back in 1970, in Saat Hindustani.

But, despite gracing us with his presence on screen for more than five decades, he is celebrating yet another career milestone with Gulabo Sitabo – which marks his very first direct-to-streaming offering.

The film – directed by Shoojit Sircar – follows the battle between the hot-headed Baankey (Ayushmann) and his grumpy landlord (Amitabh), taking place in Lucknow.

While he admits he had nothing in common with his character of Mirza, the Sholay actor had no second thoughts on picking up the role when Shoojit came calling.

‘Gulabo Sitabo came to me from Shoojit,’ he told us. ‘And when he chooses for me, I never disagree.

‘I follow him blindly, and go along.’

That sounds like a perfect plan.

Discussing the project, he added: ‘What I have developed over the years working with Shoojit is an immense respect for his craft, his understanding of the subjects he chooses to make and the great cinematic guile he possesses in designing his characters.

‘Directors are all-rounders. They possess immense qualities. They are script writers, screenplay setters, production designers, music directors, editors, actors and marketing and publicity gurus. Shoojit is in command of all these qualities.

‘Each time I have confirmation in my mind, that this is what Shoojit is thinking, he comes out and destroys it by giving me much better options in my thought.’

Gulabo Sitabo is available to stream on Amazon Prime now.
