Beyonce accepted a huge honour at the BET Awards 2020 after winning the humanitarian award and dedicated the accolade to the Black Lives Matter movement, while also encouraging the country to go out and vote.
The Formation singer received the prestigious humanitarian award during the first ever virtual BET Awards, which aired on Sunday night (28 June) in the US.
After tributes from Beyonce’s mother Tina Knowles-Lawson and Tyler Perry, former First Lady Michelle Obama delivered a heartfelt introduction for the musician.
‘Ever since she was a little girl in Houston, Beyonce Knowles-Carter has been lighting up stages and gracing the world with her talent, with her generosity of spirit, and with her love for her community,’ Michelle said.
‘You can see it in everything she does, from her music that gives voice to Black joy and Black pain, to her activism that demands justice for Black lives. And no matter how big the stages get, I know my girl isn’t satisfied unless she’s sharing all that shine she has with the next generation.’
Wearing a thick diamante choker, Beyonce then accepted the award and sought the opportunity to inspire her fans to use their vote in the coming months before the presidential election.
The Single Ladies singer began: ‘I want to dedicate this award to all of my brothers out there, all of my sisters out there inspiring me, marching and fighting for change.
‘Your voices are being heard, and you’re proving to our ancestors that their struggles were not in vain. Now we have one more thing we need to do to walk in our true power, and that is to vote.
‘I’m encouraging you to continue to take action, continue to change and dismantle a racist and unequal system. We have to continue to do this together.’
Beyonce, 38, also won the BET HER Award for her single Brown Skin Girl which features her daughter Blue Ivy, Wizkid and Saint Jhn. It means little Blue has won her first BET Award at the age of eight.
It came just hours after Beyonce released the trailer for her new Disney Plus movie, Black Is King, which is described as a visual album and ‘an affirmation of a grand purpose, with lush visuals that celebrate Black resilience and culture’.
Black Is King will arrive on Disney Plus globally on Friday 31 July.
