While stories leak about Boris Johnson’s excuse for attending an ABBA-themed party allegedly organised by Carrie Johnson at Downing Street – because he was conducting an interview there, in case you were wondering – Conservatives and their pet press have been trying to turn the spotlight on Keir Starmer.
Their chosen weapon is an incident during lockdown, ahead of the Hartlepool by-election, in which the Labour leader was filmed having a beer with staff in a Durham constituency office, which had been dismissed by local police as not requiring further investigation.

On Sunday, the Mail published yet another story on what they’ve dubbed ‘beergate’, insisting that there’s no way the Labour campaigners present would have continued working after eating at 10 pm, as claimed, and that Keir Starmer should provide proof.
They illustrated the story with an image of Starmer eating a meal at a table, and although it was identified as a stock photo inside the article, it appeared in the thumbnail as though it were an image of the incident.
The Secretary of State for Digital, Media, Culture and Sport, Nadine Dorries, shared the post , with her own take on it.
Just one of the problems with the post, and Ms Dorries sharing it, is that the featured image was taken from a 2015 Guardian article and shows Keir Starmer eating alongside the late Frank Dobson, who died in 2019.

Simon Harris pointed out the irony …
Oh Nadine. You’re basically in charge of stopping fake news online for the UK in your position, and you’ve tweeted a Daily Mail article about Keir Starmer breaking lockdown rules, with a photo showing him having dinner with Frank Dobson who died in 2019. IT’S LITERALLY YOUR JOB. pic.twitter.com/Y6J9Hy8k2D

Other tweeters had a few thoughts of their own.
1.
In a new low (and she ate kangaroo bollox on TV when skiving from work), @NadineDorries claims this photo proves Keir Starmer broke lockdown rules.
It is photo from 2015 when Starmer campaigned with Frank Dobson, who died in 2019

Hello @NadineDorries maybe (as you are the secretary of culture) you should check your facts first as you could be inclined to make a complete twat of yourself – again. https://t.co/EGA2oxJoAH

Do you see? Can you see it?
It isn't that the papers are trying their best and sometimes get it wrong:
THEY ARE DELIBERATELY FALSIFYING THE NEWS TO MAKE YOU BELIEVE A LIE THAT DIRECTLY FINANCIALLY BENEFITS THEIR OWNERS
You're not reading "the news", you're drinking their piss. https://t.co/gkkiU5j4y9

Horrible of Starmer to bring a man who died in 2019 back to life for the purpose of flouting lockdown. Thanks for bringing this definitely real evidence to light, you're actually not terrible at your job xxx

This woman is absolutely awful, even Margaret Thatcher would find her an embarrassment to her legacy. One of the worst. https://t.co/8ZMUcSjXbN
