This ‘tip’ on how to take your time off work got the 5-point takedown it deserved.

Time off work is a precious resource but in the age we live in it’s not as easy to down tools as it used to be, with multiple ways your boss can get in touch.

So any advice on how to make the most of our time off is always welcome. Except this one, a five-point ‘tip’ about PTO – Paid Time Off – which earned just the five-point takedown it deserved.

It went viral on Reddit after its was shared by primkolor who said: ‘Scrooge McDuck lighting a cigar with cash profile pic guy on twitter attempts to give workplace advice.’

Oof. And here are our favourite things people said about it.

‘If taking some time off brings the operation to a halt its time to ask for a massive pay raise.’

‘Better, it’s time to unionize.’

‘Minimize disruption by giving good notice, sure — but also definitely don’t feel bad if the company ignores your notice and tries to call you in or some BS :)’

‘This is very true. If PTO is part of your benefits package then take it. The only person you’re hurting if you don’t take vacation is yourself. If your company didn’t want you to have PTO then it wouldn’t be in your benefits package.’

‘One time I needed to take a week off of work. The company suddenly changed the PTO policy and it would no longe roll over so I decided to take a week off so I wouldn’t forfeit my time.

‘I scheduled it well in advance and before leaving, I worked really hard to make sure I completed anything I could and had things set and ready for coverage. I wrote thorough notes and guides, it was not difficult work. I talked with the manager to make sure she would have people cover these tasks and she indicated to me she would do so.

‘I came back to mountains of work. Nothing had been covered except the absolute bare minimum of critical work. I had to pull extra long days just to get my head above water.

‘That was the moment that solidified my decision to find a new job. I was gone within a couple months.’

To conclude …

‘No employee is responsible for poor managerial skills from higher ups.’
