The row about Rishi Sunak’s wife, Akshata Murty’s non-dom tax status, which became a row about both of their tax statuses after it emerged that the couple had recently held green cards, has been taking up column inches against stiff competition.
It’s also been firmly in Twitter’s gaze.
"Take my wife's name out of your HMRC database."

Isn't too much to ask that this govt has just one month without something nefarious emerging about its members' conduct?

Come now, who amongst us doesn’t have a wife legally domiciled for tax in one country, while we act as chancellor in another country, while holding a work permit in a third country, and getting paid from a trust fund in a fourth country.
Relatable!

The government: "you guys have to pay tax that will probably go up every year but we will spend it on important services for you maybe if we don't spend it on nonsense first"
Normal people: "Ok but will rich people be doing this too?"
Government: "Absolutely fucking not"— TechnicallyRon (@TechnicallyRon) April 8, 2022
my wife once had to pay tax on all her UK income because people found out about her non dom status which was interfering with my job to stop people paying their gas bills pic.twitter.com/Tk7HP5r7z4

The beleaguered chancellor attempted to shove the matter into the black hole of Whitehall enquiries.
Today I have written to the Prime Minister asking him to refer my ministerial declarations to the Independent Advisor on Ministers’ Interests.
I have always followed the rules and I hope such a review will provide further clarity. pic.twitter.com/JjVRDFJELl

But he went a step further, demanding to know how his family’s tax arrangements had made it into the public domain in the first place.

There’s nothing that can put to bed any suggestions that your priorities might be questionable quite like focusing on who grassed you up rather than whether what you did was wrong.
Rishi Sunak still does not get it. The issue is not the leak. The problem is that he and his wife thought that they could get away with dodging UK tax in the first place. https://t.co/livnwaWJLD

Some people thought a certain tatty-headed self-promoter might have thrown his political opponent under the bus of public opinion, others that Sunak had shot himself in the foot by throwing more talking points into the mix – but all were certain he deserved to be dragged for it.
So they did.

I’ll give you a clue: the leak came from a resident of 10 Downing Street that’s not me… #kitileaks https://t.co/LEwQI4DVZ8

Rishi Sunak is quite right – the important issue here is not the hypocrisy or the tax avoidance, it's who snitched on them. https://t.co/SqOCwzjoyW

Clever of him to have found a way to keep the story in the headlines for longer while also making him look like he’s more preoccupied with his wife’s tax affairs than he is with the cost of living crisis for ordinary people https://t.co/qZZWtMK6sc

The arrogance of Sunak now demanding a taxpayer-funded inquiry into who revealed his wife doesn’t pay tax is breathtaking. If an inquiry, let it focus on his US Green Card – did he retain it fraudulently? – and how his wife was granted non-dom status. https://t.co/V5N6ZyVcOe
