Sarah Platt (Tina O’Brien) and Adam Barlow (Sam Robertson)’s relationship on Coronation Street has seen its fair share of turbulence. Now, just as they seem to be settling down and are trying for a baby, a ghost from Adam’s past has appeared to shake things up – his ex-girlfriend, Lydia.
Rebecca Ryan, who plays Lydia, reveals that at first her character isn’t too concerned when she discovers that her new friend Sarah is with her old flame Adam. ‘At first she doesn’t see trouble. She just recognises him from their uni days – they were together for six months.’
It’s Adam’s attitude to her that changes how Lydia feels, as Rebecca explains. ‘She sees him and he doesn’t remember her or who she is. It’s not really acceptable, that’s a punch in the gut.’ And Adam’s behaviour continues to be upsetting to her, as he tries to drive a wedge between her and Sarah. ‘Different things happen, she is upset and taken aback. Things go on, stuff happens where he doesn’t like her being around Sarah as they’re really good friends.’
Eventually, Adam pushes Lydia too far and she makes a move against him. ‘It’s one thing after another which causes Lydia to maybe take action,’ says Rebecca. ‘His past is catching up with him, definitely.’
She has some sympathy with Sarah and Adam as a couple, saying, ‘I think they’re a great couple together, watching it. I’m like, don’t ruin it, let them be happy, they deserve it. It’s not her intention in any way to wreck them. I think they are a good match and they kind of get each other.’
Lydia’s actions aren’t malicious, according to Rebecca, ‘She is there to cause a bit of trouble but not from her own doing. She gets put into situations that she reacts to. She’s kind of justified a bit.’
While there’s trouble ahead for Sarah and Adam, Rebecca is loving the scenes that she gets to play with Tina O’Brien as the pair worked together on Waterloo Road. ‘It definitely helps to have a familiar face,’ she says. ‘I am working a lot with Tina, which is really nice and a lot more fun.’
