Thierry Henry believes David de Gea has been just as important as Cristiano Ronaldo for Manchester United this season.
The Red Devils sit sixth in the table following tonight’s 3-1 win over Burnley as Scott McTominay and Cristiano Ronaldo found the back of the net, alongside a Ben Mee own goal.
United have relied heavily on Ronaldo to rescue them this season with late goals but at the other end of the pitch De Gea has pulled off some vital saves to secure them points.
Speaking ahead of tonight’s clash with Burnley at Old Trafford, Henry was keen to laud praise on the Spaniard, as well as picking out two midfielders for their displays at the halfway stage of the campaign.
‘Still I think, Bruno Fernandes can be in there,’ the Arsenal legend replied when asked who has delivered for United this season alongside Ronaldo and De Gea.
‘Fred for me has been finally reaching the level that people were expecting of him to reach in recent matches.
‘But I’m going to have to stick with De Gea.
‘I know people are talking a lot about Ronaldo and scoring goals at the end of the game to win games.
‘But De Gea put them in those positions and situations for Ronaldo to be able to win the game at the end of the game.’
Tonight’s result was a vast improvement on the 1-1 draw with Newcastle on Monday which saw De Gea bail his team out.
His display certainly didn’t go unnoticed with Ralf Rangnick highlighting his key contribution to earn them a point at St James’ Park.
‘In the end it could have been 2-2 – again there were two or three fantastic saves from David De Gea, similar to the game at Norwich, but we also had our chances to score a second goal,’ the German said.
‘For sure, David is one of the best goalkeepers in the world – he showed that at Norwich and in the game today.’
