Roy Keane claims he would tell David De Gea and Harry Maguire to ‘prove me wrong’ if he ever became Manchester United manager.
The former United captain has been heavily critical of both De Gea and Maguire during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reign, and even went as far as to suggest he would not have let them back on the team bus following their poor performances against Tottenham last year.
In a video for Sky Bet, Micah Richards light-heartedly raised the prospect of Keane returning to United as a manager.
But Keane did not see the funny side as he replied to the former Manchester City defender: ‘Why would that be a joke?
‘Have you ever been in a dressing room with me as a player? Have you ever been in a dressing room with me when I’ve been a manager? So why jump to these conclusions?
‘A manager is meant to challenge people, you’re meant to fall out with people.
‘Managers do that, you can’t fall out with everyone, obviously not, I’ve managed in the Premier League, I have to fight my corner, nobody else is!’
Richards then said to Keane: ‘No, no. The reason why it was funny was because of De Gea and Maguire, that was it.’
Keane then revealed how he would handle the situation if he ever got the job at United.
‘So the first thing, you’d walk into the club, pull them two [and say] ‘I’ve been really critical… prove me wrong’,’ said Keane.
‘And that’s the end of the conversation. If they get upset, no problem, players are upset all the time.
‘And it’s not about the players liking the manager. The most important thing is, you hope, that the players respect the manager.’
