Several US cities and states are offering children five to 11 years old money if they get vaccinated against the coronavirus, on the heels of the Pfizer jab receiving federal approval for use for the age group.
New York City is allowing children to claim $100 if they get their first Pfizer shot at a vaccine site operated by the city. Instead of the cash, the children can choose tickets to the Statue of Liberty or other attractions, or the Brooklyn Cyclones baseball team.
It is the same program that was already available to older people who got vaccinated.
‘We really want kids to take advantage, families take advantage of that,’ New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Thursday, two days after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) cleared Pfizer’s jab for kids five to 11.
‘Everyone could use a little more money around the holidays,’ de Blasio said. ‘But, most importantly, we want our kids and our families to be safe.’
Health officials in Chicago are also giving $100 gift cards to children five to 11 when they get their shot at city public health events or clinics.
Officials in Louisiana said that kids five to 11 years old will soon be able to get $100 as well.
Meanwhile in San Antonio, Texas, parents and guardians can claim a $100 gift card for themselves for H-E-B grocery stores.
