The Tower came to a dramatic conclusion on Wednesday night but not all viewers were left convinced – with some sure it was left ambiguous to make way for a second series.
The latest ITV crime thriller has been keeping fans on the edge of their seats all week, with DS Sarah Collins (Gemma Whelan) given the difficult task of investigating two deaths which occurred within moments of the first episode.
Veteran PC Hadley Matthews (Nick Holder) and teenager Farah Mehenni (Lola Elsokari) both fell from the roof of a tower block, witnessed by rookie cop PC Lizzie Adama (Tahirah Sharif) and a little boy called Ben, with Lizzie soon fleeing the scene.
The following two episodes saw Sarah work tirelessly to work out how the tragic incident occurred, with some questions finally being answered tonight when her partner in crime DC Steve Bradshaw (Jimmy Akingbola) found Lizzie about to jump from a roof herself.
A vital piece of evidence that was supposedly destroyed by suspicious cop DI Kieran Shaw’s (Emmett J Scanlan) wife, was shown to viewers to still be in her possession
The final scene saw Lizzie meet with Sarah at Farrah’s grave, where the pair seemed to realise their respect for each other and hinted they could work together in the future – which could set things up nicely for a season two.
However, some of those watching were left unsure about the way the events ended, taking to Twitter to share their thoughts.
One wrote: ‘Liked #TheTower but I am confused by the ending… I like things to be tidied up, and I feel there were more questions than answers.’
Another said: ‘So his wife kept the phone – so what, its finished now. Or has it #TheTower.’
‘Am assuming there will be a second series to this drama, as there are so many unanswered questions #TheTower,’ echoed a third.
A fourth commented: ‘#TheTower Unless there is a 2nd series that finale was weak. The handing in of the phone in the last 5 minutes could’ve been a real cliff-hanger.’
‘Well what a c**p ending to The Tower! #TheTower #ITV,’ shared another.
However, the show’s stars previously addressed the idea of things not being so neatly tied up, seemingly hinting at a second series.
Tahirah, who plays troubled cop Lizzie said to Metro.co.uk and other press: ‘I don’t know if like at the end we’d like tied everything up in like a nice little neat bow, like here we go, we’ve solved everything and here’s the resolution.
‘I think what I found interesting about reading the scripts was that actually it’s still asking the viewers to ask themselves questions and to question what they hear or what they see.
‘I’m really very happy to be a part of something like that where the actual crime or, the storyline is kind of is wrapped up but the biggest story surrounding the events isn’t.’
The Tower can be streamed in full on the ITV Hub now.
